We travelled to Oadby to play the Owls in the first round of the Leicester League Cup; the 3rd encounter with them this season. As the last 2 were battling affairs, we knew the girls had to be focused to get a positive result.

We told the girls before the game started they would have to pressure the opposition into making mistakes and track back to defend as a team when we didn’t have possession of the ball.

As the first half kicked off, the girls were into the game straight away, albeit against a strong wind. Rugby continued to pressure the home team, forcing them into errors. Rugby started passing the ball around nicely as they found space and tackled like tigers when we didn’t have the ball.

Rugbys continued desire to play football finally payed dividends as they finished the half, which they dominated in front of goal with a positive result.

Second half started, with the strong wind behind the girls. Rugby continued to dominate possession and shots on goal as Oadby struggled against the wind. Oadby were unlucky defending a corner and the game was gone for them. Chasing the game, they were limited to some long range efforts as Rugby defended heroically as a team.

The game ended with a positive performance for the girls, they saved their best team performance of the season to see us through to the next round of the Cup. The skills developed in training were well utilised today with some excellent passing moves, and never giving up a lost ball.

Overall Performance: Took the game by the scruff of the neck and dominated the game from start to finish. Massive improvement in team play. Energy levels and running of the girls today, was by far the best they’ve played. They attacked in numbers and closed down their opponents not giving them time on the ball.

Coaches player of the match: Vinny controlled the centre of midfield and broke up any attacks, turning them around into Rugby attacks.

Supporters player of the match: Ruby; A rock at the back in defence. Cool and calm, she dealt with any long balls, or any forward running at her with confidence.

Kunis Coffee and Comics player of the match: Hav; Team captain and led by example. Quick and strong down the right, never gave up a lost cause. Her persistence gained her reward in front of goal.
