It was cup match time as we set off on our long journey to play Asfordby away.

In what turned out to be an excellent game of football despite the weather and heavy going grass pitch. As the whistle sounded to start the first half Asfordby immediately pressed the Rugby girls into the defensive half for most of the opening period. This pressure resulted in an early goal for the home team despite some excellent goalkeeping and defending from the Rugby Town team.

This moment seemed to act as the catalyst for the Rugby girls inspiring a late first half fight back with several waves of strong attacking football with some good chances and eventually a well deserved equaliser at the end of the first half. With both teams ending the half with honours even the stage was set for an exciting second half.

The Rugby girls didn’t disappoint and took the same approach and strength of play into the second period. This effective midfield and attaching style with real strength, purpose and continuity again created numerous second half opportunities in front of the Asfordby goal. Culminating in a beautiful pass and assist from the left wing and smart finish past the excellent Asfordby keeper.

In the closing minutes the home team applied pressure on the Rugby goal looking for a late equaliser but the Town shot stopper stood firm in the goal supported by some excellent last minute defending. As the game came to a close Rugby counter attacked with the game being stretched and scored a third to effectively end this highly entertaining contest. In what was an excellent and well fought cup match between two strong green league teams.

The reward for Rugby girls is to play another cup round and you could see what the win and the cup run actually meant to the team. Well done Rugby for never giving up and playing so well despite the early start and tough conditions and producing our first win in 2024. Tough away fixture but you did so well. Well done Rugby girls.

A huge thanks to parents, and especially Mums, on this Mother’s Day, for all your support.
PPOM: The entire team for working hard for each other, and doing everything that the coach asked of them
