“Yippee ki-ya!!!”

After the Christmas break any game was potentially tricky, how fit were the girls? What players were available? Would we return to action at the same level as before…? With only 11 available, at least the amount of tinkering with the lineup was not needed this week as the team selected itself.

The game kicked off and almost immediately the girls began to exert their dominance as they set up camp in the Klibworth half. Chloe, Cara and Bailey were linking really well, and with Grace, Ellie, and Sophie playing some delightful through balls it looked like only a matter of time before a stubborn defence was cracked. The visiting keeper was superb in keeping us at bay until 25 minutes with a string of fine blocks.

Then two goals in quick succession from Chloe and Cara enabled everyone to relax. Klibworth had their only real two attacks thwarted by Fifi and the defence of Macy, Hollie, Ruby and Jaz. The first was blocked by an on rushing Fifi as a rare long ball needed dealing with, the second was mopped up by a combination of Jaz and Ruby as they worked hard together in recovering their positions after a swift Klibworth counter attack.

Rugby swept the visitors away before half time, despite missing at least 6 excellent chances to increase the lead, 4 more were taken by Bailey, Sophie, Cara and Chloe.

The best move of the game came when Fifi quickly took a goal kick to Jaz who passed into Sophie. She set for Grace who played a lovely ball wide for Bailey to run onto, an early cross into Chloe looked to have set up full length move and goal of the season contender but the Klibworth keeper did brilliantly to smother the ball.

HT 6-0

In the second half we looked to move the ball a little more and back ourselves in 1v1 situations in an attempt to dominate not only territory but also possession. Improving the girls pass completion remains a key team ‘EBI’.

If anything we were guilty of missing more chances in the second half than we did in the first, as a number of 1v1s were squandered or saved, and both Grace and Sophie saw longer range efforts narrowly miss the target.

With some better finishing the score could have easily been 20 or more and the ref (rightly) was doing his bit to even things up where possible so as to create more challenge for the girls.

Even still Cara and Chloe added four more between them to the teams tally and another 3 points were secured.

As well as the large number of goals scored, we have now kept 4 clean sheets in a row which is a fantastic achievement.

Individual accolades are always nice to receive but nobody can achieve in a team sport without the support of everyone around them.

Thanks to Bob and James for running the line and to all the parents for your brilliant support from the hill!
