Squad: Erin, Olivia, Freya, Annabelle, Anya, Louise, Ruby, Jasmine, Chloe

Our 2021 Tour De Leicestershire continued with our away trip to Croft on Sunday morning and we were welcomed with grass, mud, wind and rain. The grass proved to be a difficult surface for Rugby to adjust to, with it being heavier and slower than the Butlin Road astroturf they’re used to, and the usual passing and wing play proved to be difficult to get going.

This led to a more attritional match than we’ve been used to seeing. The midfield duo of Anya and Annabelle were getting stuck in with tackles and this set the template for what would be a feisty match. Jasmine and Chloe were able to have a couple of difficult chances but were unable to test the keeper. The home team were equally as committed and the defence of Freya and Olivia were chasing and closing down the opponents attack with their usual mix of pace and grace.

Croft had their most creative player beginning to have more of an influence on the game and had their first shot on target, and Erin in goal was unlucky to have the ball take a nasty bobble that evaded her reach. After a robust challenge, Annabelle was substituted for Ruby and she immediately started to take on the full backs and test the goalkeeper. Anya took a well earned rest to be replaced by Louise and Rugby looked to press forward to get even but a fast break from Croft after a throw in left Erin with little chance to prevent the ball finding the back of the net just before half time.

The second half began with Jasmine taking over GK duties and Erin moved up front. Rugby made a fast start and a high energy approach with faster attacks, with Ruby able to start using her winger talents to create chances. Anya continued to grind out the challenges in midfield and a superb through ball to Erin and a smart finish brought Rugby back into the game.

With Olivia and Freya running hard and keeping a strong back line and making last ditch tackles, the midfield became a real battle with every player getting stuck in, with fouls being committed by both sides. The ball broke loose to Ruby who advanced into the Croft area and Chloe was able to apply the finishing touch.

With the game going into the final few minutes all square, both teams went searching for the winning goal. It was great to see the girls showing commitment, hard work and not being afraid to dig in and battle for the ball. With the midfield pushing forward, Annabelle saw her goal bound shot blocked by an opponents face and the ball ricocheted out to Anya. Unfazed, she made a super finish to complete a stunning comeback in the 2nd half.
