Rugby Town returned to action with an early kick off away to Sileby. After a perfect start to the season so far they were keen to maintain it on Sunday morning. The no greasy food rule but with the incentive of a batch (the correct word for a bread roll for those in the know) afterwards was on offer for a good away result.

The first half set the tone of the game. Sileby started off strongly and showed they could play with speed and strength. The Sileby striker and Megan getting an early introduction but Megan was upto the task and showed she was not going to be scared off or would not back down. Megan picked up an early injury which she played through with and demonstrated her commitment to the cause.

Both teams started to get into the game and the first goal could have gone to either team but Rugby have worked hard on their set play with Poppy being rewarded the first goal of the game.

The game continued but at times was scrappy, there were a few factors that contributed to this, poor weather, the fact that the pitch was grass and narrow in places, that it was an early kick off. However Rugby didn’t let any of these distract them and they worked hard and that hard work paid off during the rest of the game.

Izzy clearly had three weetabix and was rewarded with a lovely hat trick, Sophie managed to celebrate her birthday with a great goal and Leila almost broke the net twice with impressive power in her shots.

The back 3 were a formidable force once again (think back to Arsenal Tony Adams era and you will get the picture) and all did their job well. There was only one miscommunication today  which resulted in a goal for Sileby. Coventry City should be taking note about a strong defensive unit considering some of the recent results.

The midfield did not stop all game and were kept busy, covering lots of ground between them and making tackles to break up the Sileby attacks.

Lots to go back to the training ground with but a really good result on the road.

Full Time 7-1

It was a  really tough game for Rugby and the score line didn’t reflect how tough an opposition Sileby were  but it  did reflect that Rugby did not give up and every player gave their all. The promise of a batch clearly worked this week!

Coaches player Izzy , great hat-trick against tough opposition.

Thanks to Dave and Dave for all their encouragement during the match. Thanks to  Sileby for hosting, the referee, the linesmen (Especially Dean  returning  for  flag duties  ) and to the parents for venturing out so early.

P.S. Happy birthday Sophie
