After a home victory against Lutterworth on the 5th Rugby were on the road again, wearing PURPLE shirts for their next league match. All of  the parents were delighted with a 9.30 kick off in Loughborough on a Sunday morning, especially the night after Eurovision and staying up late to see the Northern Lights (much cheaper to look out the window than to go to a nordic country anyway). At least the weather was decent for today’s early morning kick off and also a special mention for the excellent food/drink facilities that Loughborough parents put on for their home matches.

Rugby needed to win to keep up their bid for 2nd place in the table and started the game brightly with Izzy having a shot that went just wide. Leila then had a good run that resulted in a shot for Izzy that went just over. There was a sense that it was only a matter of time before Rugby broke the deadlock and after a goal kick that was intercepted by Izzy, Leila made it 1-0 to Rugby.

Sophie then put in a great cross that almost resulted in the second goal. Ronniee then played a good pass into Leila who had a shot well saved by the Loughborough keeper. After a great Rugby corner there was a scramble that resulted in the ball going just past the post. Poppy then crossed the ball for Leila who finished well to make it 2-0 to Rugby.

Rugby went on the attack again with Poppy and Jasmine both having shots that went just wide. Soon after Leila crossed for Sophie to make it 3 for Rugby. Only a few minutes later it was 4 with Leila finishing after a goalmouth scramble.

Half time 4-0

Into the second half and Ioana had a shot after a quick throw in. Loughborough started to get back into the game which resulted in the game becoming a bit scrappy. After a big kick from Megan, Jasmine turned and had a shot that was well saved. Shortly after it was 5 for Rugby with Izzy scoring after a well taken corner from Leila.

Jasmine then had a good run down the right wing going past 2 players before taking a free kick that was very well saved by the keeper. Rugby were still looking for more goals with Ronniee going close after a good run. Megan then made a good save after a shot from Loughborough, impressive because she had not been called into action previously. Leila, Sophie, Ioana and Izzy all came close either shooting wide or having shots saved by the keeper. The game ended just after a free kick taken from Megan just over halfway that resulted in another good save.

Full time 5-0

A good performance from Rugby against a determined Loughborough side with an excellent goalkeeper. The defence were excellent again with Daisy-May, Amelia and Caitlin more than a match for the Loughborough forwards and dealing with all attacks.

Coaches player Jasmine for showing huge effort today playing out of her normal positions. She has become one of the players that can be called upon to play anywhere.

Thanks to Purple Shirts Dave and White Socks Dave, to the parents, to the referee who was excellent and allowed the game to flow and gave clear instructions to all the players, to the linesmen and to the opposition for a fantastic game played in the right spirit and also a thanks to the weather for being better than the last visit to Woodbrook Vale school.
