Well, the big kick-off finally arrived and with it came a few nerves – not just for the girls, but for the parents too (some of whom looked more jittery than the players).
Early doors saw plenty of pass backs to the keeper, just to keep everyone’s heart rate up.
Maisie took on a brand-new role in goal and looked like she’d been there for years – confident, calm, and pulling off a fantastic save from a free kick.
Chloe produced what can only be described as the best left-footed ball ever seen – parents may still be talking about it next week.
Meanwhile, the new 8 second rule for goalkeepers came into play with the ref counting down from 5.
Anais got things rolling in style, slotting in two first-half goals to settle the nerves and send Rugby Town into half-time in a very comfortable position.
The second half started with a more subdued tempo, but the girls soon found their rhythm. A rock-solid defensive line, clever use of the wings, and some silky footwork kept the game firmly in Rugby Town’s control. Anais went close again with a long-range strike that whistled just over, Macy nearly bagged one herself, and the passing was crisp and connected.
Just when we thought the game was all wrapped up, Friar Lane snuck in a goal with seconds to spare – but by then the points were already safely in Rugby Town hands.
A deserved win, a confident start in the Gold League, and every single player played their part. Parents can now breathe again… until next week.
