Sunday 21st September
The U14s hosted Anstey this Sunday in an eagerly anticipated fixture.
Anstey came to Butlin Rd as the early season pacesetters in the Platinum League, following 2 good victories against fine opposition.
The game saw a strong start from Anstey. But Rugby Town’s midfield fought for every ball, whilst resolute defending held the opposition to few chances.
As Rugby Town grew into the game, 2 quick breaks saw Town very nearly take the lead.
At the other end, some excellent saves from Amber, including one remarkable double save, kept the scoreline to 0-0 at half time.
The 2nd half saw Town take an early lead as Soph latched onto a back pass, round the keeper and finish with her usual coolness. As legs tired, Town’s midfield of Freya, Jess, Emily, Willow, Liss and Maddie kept their shape well, as Anstey searched for an equaliser.
When midfield lines were broken, resolute defending by Maia, Iz, Abbey, Nancy and Amber frustrated Anstey on several occasions. Andrea, in goal for the 2nd half, made some excellent and brave saves to maintain Town’s lead. The quality of Anstey’s play eventually resulted in a well taken equaliser, leading to a nervous last few minutes for Town. Town kept their shape and energy, resulting in the match finishing in a 1-1 draw.
It was pleasing to come away with a point in such a hard fought game. The girls never gave up, showed collective discipline, and should be proud to end Anstey’s winning start to the season.
